How Hair Grows
Laser hair removal often requires multiple treatments because it is only effective when hair is in the active growth stage. There are three stages of hair growth.
This is the growth phase of your hair and when laser hair removal is most effective. It is in this phase your hair contains the most amount of melanin. Hair on your head grows roughly one half inch per month and it grows faster in the summer time then the winter time.
The catagen phase follows the anagen phase and can last anywhere between 8 and 10 days. This is a short transitional phase in which hair ceases to grow.
The final phase of hair growth, during the telogen phase, hair enters a resting period. The hair is eventually released by your hair follicle during this phase and falls out. The existing follicle will remain inactive for roughly 3 months and then re-enter the catagen phase in which hair again begins to grow.
Hair follicles maintain their independence from each other and follow the stages of growth at different times which is why laser hair removal requires multiple treatments to ensure each follicle is addressed during the initial growth phase.

Performed by Registered Nurses with over 6 years of experience in laser hair removal, the procedure involves a small hand piece that touches the skin to deliver the laser light, emitting a light spray of cooling solution onto the skin just before each laser pulse. The time duration of the procedure can vary from patient to patient depending on the amount of hair treated. Most patients will require multiple treatments, with the number depending upon skin color and coarseness of the hair.
