Annapolis Liposuction

LiposuctionNumerous men and women are discovering the benefits of liposuction in the Baltimore, Maryland area. Liposuction is a popular surgery performed to remove unwanted fat deposits and can sculpt and reshape virtually any area of the body including the neck, upper arms, above the breast, the abdomen, buttocks, hips, thighs, knees, calves, and ankles. This procedure is an excellent method for removing localized fat that doesn’t respond to traditional dieting and exercise – but the procedure is not a substitute for weight reduction.

Women and men usually visit us in Annapolis for liposuction because they notice persistent, diet-resistant deposits of fat in the “saddle-bag” areas, abdomen, knees, ankles, waist, and under the chin. Men with enlarged breasts may also choose this procedure to achieve a firmer, more masculine appearance.

If you’re unsure about the areas of your body that could benefit from a liposuction procedure, Plastic Surgery Specialists’ board-certified plastic surgeons can help you determine exactly what you need to look and feel your best with a consultation.

Liposuction in Annapolis

The liposuction procedure is performed under local anesthesia with IV sedation or general anesthesia administered by a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist in our outpatient surgery center with no overnight stay required.

The tumescent technique is commonly utilized with this treatment. A solution of saline and anesthetic is injected first, making the area “tumescent” or swollen, to allow for easier separation of the fat from other tissue. Ultrasonic liposelection techniques are often used in more difficult areas. Utilizing a special medical wand that is inserted through tiny incisions, the fat is removed with the suction device.

Liposuction Recovery and Results

Following this procedure, patients go home with a snug dressing and elastic girdle over the treated area, which helps the skin conform smoothly to the shape of the underlying tissue. There will be some post-operative pain for a few days, but that is easily controlled by medication. Swelling and discoloration will also subside within three to six weeks.

The results of liposuction will show improved proportion of the targeted areas with the body’s other physical features and a more attractive physical shape in and out of clothing.

Other Body Reshaping Procedures

Liposuction is often performed with other body contouring procedures such as tummy tuck(abdominoplasty). Women often choose a more comprehensive improvement by combining liposuction with breast augmentation in Maryland. To further explore additional procedures that can be combined with a liposuction treatment, feel free to contact any of our board-certified plastic surgeons: Dr. David H. Lowe, Dr. D. Paul Buhrer, or Dr. Christopher J. Spittler.

Liposuction FAQ

Can fat cells return after liposuction?

When you hit puberty, your body stops producing fat cells. At that point, your body does not gain or lose weight by producing more fat cells, the fat cells you have just become bigger or smaller depending on diet and exercise. Once the fat cells are removed by liposuction they’re gone forever. If you gain weight it is going to be distributed more equally throughout all the remaining fat cells. The benefit of liposuction is that you can reduce the number of fat cells in those areas that are genetically predetermined to have a lot of fat in order to shape your body.

Weight gain can occur after liposuction if the patient does not maintain a healthy lifestyle. Liposuction is not a cure-all for poor dietary habits or inactivity. However, it can remove fat from areas that are resistant to weight loss, providing greater motivation for the patient to continue their healthy diet and exercise regimen.
