Tummy Tuck
A tummy tuck, technically known as the abdominoplasty, is a major surgical procedure performed to remove excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen and to tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall.
Patient Assessment
- Excess wrinkled skin and fat on the abdomen and/or weakened abdominal muscles caused by pregnancy, aging or significant weight loss. Women are usually the candidates but some men suffer from the latter causes.
Intended Result
- A firmer abdominal wall, a narrower waistline and a flatter lower abdomen.
- A more attractive physical shape in and out of clothing.
Procedure
- Procedure is performed under general anesthesia administered by an M.D. anesthesiologist or Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist in the outpatient surgery center in our office, with no overnight stay. In some instances, depending on the extent of the operation, surgery is performed in a local hospital.
- A bikini incision across the lower abdomen is used. Excess skin and fat are removed and the abdominal muscles are tightened.
Recovery
- Patient goes home wearing a firm elastic garment. A light support garment is recommended for two to three weeks. It may be removed for brief periods to shower.
- There will be some post-operative pain for a few days but it is easily controlled by medication.
- Sutures are invisible under the skin and will dissolve when healing is complete.
Other Procedures
- Liposuction is often used with a tummy tuck to create a better body contour.
