Nose Reshaping, Rhinoplasty

Nose reshaping, technically known as the Rhinoplasty, is one of the most common of all plastic surgery procedures. The procedure is done to reduce or increase the size of the nose, change the shape of the tip or bridge of the nose, narrow the size of the nostrils, or change the angle between the nose and upper lip. The Rhinoplasty is also performed to correct a birth defect or injury, or to help relieve some breathing problems.

Rhinoplasty Patient Assessment

  • A nose which doesn't fit the face, whether caused by birth, accident, or disease.
  • A nose which if adjusted slightly would enhance overall facial appearance and proportion.
  • A breathing problem due to internal nasal deformity.
  • Computer imaging assists in discussing the desired result.

Intended Result of Nose Reshaping

  • A more natural-looking nose in proper proportion to all other facial features.
  • Improved breathing in a reconstructive nose surgery.

Rhinoplasty Procedure

  • A rhinoplasty is performed under local anesthesia with IV sedation in the outpatient surgery center in our office, with no overnight stay.
  • For cosmetic reasons, incisions are generally made inside the nose. Occasionally, small external incisions are required. Through the incisions, cartilage and bone are cut, trimmed and manipulated to reshape the nose and alter its external appearance.
  • Sometimes a chin augmentation will be offered in conjunction with a rhinoplasty to improve the profile.

Recovery for Rhinoplasty

  • Patient goes home with a splint holding the bone and cartilage in their new shape. A light nasal pack may also be applied to protect the septum. Inside packing would be removed within 24-48 hours, the outer splint within a week.
  • There is minimal post-operative pain that is easily controlled by medication.
  • Most swelling and discoloration will subside quickly over two weeks.

Other Facial Procedures

  • Your doctor may recommend cheek or chin implants depending on the overall look you are trying to achieve. Please discuss these additional options with the doctor.

Rhinoplasty Insurance Considerations

  • Nose surgery for breathing problems is covered by most medical insurance plans. Cosmetic nose surgery, however, is not covered by insurance and the patient is responsible for payment of the surgical costs.
