Facelift

A facelift is a surgical procedure designed to set back the clock by improving the most visible signs of aging by removing excess fat, tightening underlying muscles, and redraping the skin of the face and neck. The facelift is done to correct the effects of gravity on the neck, cheek and jowl areas.

Patient Assessment

• Sagging and aging face and neck.
• Double chin, turkey neck and jowls.
• Computer imaging assists in discussing the desired results.

Intended Result

• A more natural, younger and more rested-looking appearance.
• Major improvement is apparent in the first two to three weeks with continued improvement and "smoothing out" of the patient's appearance over six to nine months.

Procedure

• Procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia with IV sedation in our Annapolis ambulatory surgical center, with no overnight stay.
• Incisions are made within the hairline above the ear, continuing downward around and behind the earlobe and back into the hair. It is not necessary to shave hair for the procedure.
• The facial skin is separated from the fat and muscle underneath and then pulled up and backward in the temple and ear areas. The excess is removed.
• Sagging muscles and connective tissues are tightened, accumulations of fat removed.

Recovery

• The patient goes home with head wrapped in dressings which are removed in one or two days.
• There will be minimal post-operative pain that is easily controlled by prescription medication.
• Most swelling and discoloration will subside within two to three weeks.
• Full activities may be resumed in a month.
• Complimentary pre-surgical skin care treatment and post-surgical shampoo and cosmetic makeover are provided by an on-staff esthetician.

Other Procedures

• To effect a more complete facial rejuvenation, the following procedures may be done in conjunction with a facelift:
  • A brow lift (for wrinkles in the forehead)
  • Blepharoplasty (for wrinkles and/or bags around the eyes)
  • Liposuction (for the removal of fat under the chin)
  • Laser surgery (for skin rejuvenation)
  • BOTOX Cosmetic® injections or injectable fillers.

Insurance Considerations

• Facelifts are considered cosmetic procedures and are not covered by medical insurance. The patient is responsible for payment of surgical and related costs.
