Body Fat Reduction
Body fat reduction, more commonly known as liposuction, fat suction, or suction assisted lipectomy, is a popular surgery performed to remove unwanted fat deposits. The specific areas of the body the procedure is performed on include the neck, upper arms, above the breast, the abdomen, buttocks, hips, thighs, knees, calves, and ankles. Although not a substitute for weight reduction, liposuction is an excellent method of removing localized fat that doesn't respond to dieting and exercise.
Patient Assessment
- Individuals, both women and men, who have persistent deposits of fat in the "saddle-bag" areas, abdomen, knees, ankles, waist, and under the chin.
- Men with enlarged breasts may be candidates.
- Computer imaging assists in discussing the desired results.
Intended Result
- Improved proportion of the targeted areas with the body's other physical features.
- A more attractive physical shape in and out of clothing.
Procedure
- The procedure is performed under local anesthesia with IV
sedation or general anesthesia administered by an M.D. anesthesiologist
or Licensed Nurse anesthetist in the outpatient surgery center
in our office, with no overnight stay.
- The tumescent technique is commonly utilized. A solution of saline and anesthetic is injected first, making the area "tumescent" or swollen, to allow for easier separation of the fat from other tissue.
- Ultrasonic liposelection (VASER) techniques are often used
in more difficult
areas.
- Procedure utilizes cannulas that are inserted through tiny incisions. The fat is removed with the suction.
Recovery
- Patient goes home with a snug dressing and elastic girdle over the treated area, which helps the skin conform smoothly to the shape of the underlying tissue.
- There will be some post-operative pain for a few days that is easily controlled by medication.
- Swelling and discoloration will subside within three to six weeks.
